Here’s an interesting example of ‘Sarees in Hollywood’. The 2008 film ‘Rachel Getting Married’ is an intense family drama starring Anne Hathaway as Kym and Rosemarie DeWitt as Rachel. Kym temporarily leaves rehab in order to attend the wedding of her sister Rachel but her arrival causes tensions within the family and opens old wounds. As we can see, the wedding itself has an Indian theme but what I find interesting here is that while the costume department seem to have used genuine sarees, they’ve used improvised blouses. Perhaps the climate didn’t suit a traditional saree blouse, probably a situation faced by many saree wearers in more temperate areas. However, I think this picture does demonstrate that, if necessary, almost any top can look good as a saree blouse.
