What kind of saree should a lady wear on a lion or tiger-hunting trip? Unlike the recent headlines and outrage over the shooting of a magnificent lion, young women some 80 years ago were usually thought to be “modern” and quite liberated in doing things that only men had done before.
Judging by the sheerness and weight of this saree, it appears to be a mottled (floral or ?) print silk, draped very simply over a short-sleeved choli. Do bring your sun glasses with rounded lenses, and don’t bother with jewellery. We can’t see what sort of footwear the huntress had on, hidden by the dead lion.
There were once many Asian lions in India, though the specimen in the photograph may have been the more common African variety. Antique images of royal tiger hunts showing females in sarees are a bit more common, and I may have posted one of those before. If not, I will do so in the future!
