I speak fluent Gujarati and love gujarati culture in general (ok, still not fond of sugar in my dal, but rest of the stuff is pretty OK) but I never thought of gujarati women as very fashionable. All that has changed now.

Nice saree and interesting sleeve less blouse.

I have mixed feelings about the sleeve less blouses. The problem is that there is the pallu to contend with, so the full effect of being sleeve less is lost and at times, with the pallu covering the blouse, it just seems that you are not wearing any blouse.

This is also a issue with the spaghetti strap blouses, but not as much.

Oh I hate YKK company – on zippers in blouses

I have no issues with zippers in blouses, on occasions, I have tried to incorporate it in my work as well. But I really really hate this, when the zipper is not put together correctly and the seam shows and the slider is hanging out! Can’t stand that slider, with YKK mark on it.. it doesn’t say YKK, it says yukk…!

The zipper should be invisible and the slider should be locked.

Stay with hooks, constructions of those have gotten a lot better and they blend in a lot easier with the fabric.

Blouse Designs for the New Year

It is a new year and with that comes a chance to update your wardrobe and try some new and unique styles. Here are a few blouse designs which, though these blouse cuts are nothing totally new, each has a little something that makes it stick out and look unique.

A narrow shoulder and a high neckline are a conservative look, but add that slit down the front and you add a little more zing to the blouse. I wouldn’t go with such a low slit though for practical reasons but a shallow slit in the front of the blouse could spice up your blouse without being too revealing.

A spaghetti strap halter has been done many time before. What’s different about this blouse though, is that the blouse itself is well-structured and not nearly as exposing as these bikini blouses all the Bollywood stars are wearing these days. The gold border along the top edge of the blouse also makes for a nice detail.

Here you have your classic cut blouse but what I like is the two-toned transparent sleeves. It is a small factor but it adds a charm to the blouse.

Two Ruched Blouse Design Ideas

It is sometimes hard to come up with new blouse design ideas. Have you thought about experimenting with the texture of your blouse? Here are two new blouse design ideas. Both have ruched fabric which adds a whole new look to the blouse.

The neckline of this first blouse is very elegant with a large scoop neck in the back and a high neckline in the front. The front part of the neckline is heavy with sequins and beading which could even substitute a necklace. The ruched net fabric of the blouse is a unique look and for larger women may help to hide some curves that you’d like to keep hidden.

Though this blouse is again ruched an a unique look, I can’t say that I find the lace on the back to be very flattering. The lace around the neckline on the front of the blouse makes for a nice feminine neckline but the back of the blouse is a little overdone. A simpler lace border would perhaps work very well here.

Not all saree blouses have to be bikini blouses and reveal more

Not all blouses have to show more skin to be contemporary. This one is “proper”; it holds its own and provides support to the saree and looks amazing.

Midnight black with a hint of green and a sprinkle of gold

Ok more than a hint of green and a LOT more than a sprinkle of gold, but this transparent net saree has some gorgeous embroidery!

The asymmetric, off the shoulder blouse doesn’t conflict with the traditional embroidery on the saree and over all the saree looks kind of hip, me thinks.

80’s Style Blouse

I’m having flask backs to the 80’s right now while looking at this blouse. No complaints about the saree but the puffed sleeves on the blouse are a little too masculine. I’d love to see what is underneath what appears to be a cropped jacket, that part has potential. The problem with such a broad shoulder is that it is hard to pull off. Sure, this thin model looks great in it but image a larger women in this blouse.

I hate it when they stereotype what saree can a mother wear and what saree can the daughter wear (ok, in this case they wear the same saree, but different blouses)!. But why does one have to be in a different age group to wear different types of blouses; the same woman may feel like an angel one day and a devil the same evening; and she needs to have different types and styles of blouses – one to hold on to her halo and other one to hold on to the horns!

I try to design two or three different types of blouses for each saree; even if it is a “event saree”, designed for a specific place, it is not a bad idea to have different blouses. At times it is better to get two exact same sarees to get all the material so you can experiment.

I do like this saree, by the way. It is from SareeWorld. About $400.

Darn – no saree clad women in the 2010 kingfisher calendar!

I am shocked and disappointed! No saree clad women in Kingfisher calendar? What is this world coming to?

My only solace is that I can think of the calendar as a “potential saree blouse design” calendar, because these days it is so hard to distinguish between the saree blouse and the bikini blouse.

So by the power ordained it me by the gods of NewYear’s eve party hangover, I proclaim the kingfisher calendar as the “kingfisher saree blouse design calendar”.

Unique Blouse Design Idea

Here’s an interesting blouse design featured on vasansi.com. This look is dainty with an antiquated appeal.

This blouse, features woven zari floral motifs and blue velvet floral patterns with a patchwork design. The colors are vibrant and the textures complement each other well. I especialy love the puffed long-sleeves of the blouse which seem to give the whole ensemble a more playful feminine look.

I’ve chosen a few new blouse designs for today’s hot or not comparison. All of them caught my eye, and not necessarily in a good way.

The single shoulder strap blouse:

Hot – cute and simple (from homeindia.com)

Not – The decoration on the strap is too large and the way the choli fabric pulls at the chest is not flattering (bharatplaza.com)

The Fringe:

Hot – small hanging bead tassels (cbazaar.com)

Not – mud flaps (bharatplaza.com)

The halter-top blouse:

Hot – though I’d wear it without the sleeves (homeindia.com)

Not – its bunched up and looks unfitted (homeindia.com)

Ruffed shoulders give a feminine and dainty look to a blouse. I think a small ruffle adds a certain fun spunk to a blouse. Here are a few of my picks fom cbazaar’s latest designs.

Bohemian Saree – Blouse Ensemble

This earth tone kundan work saree is light and drapes nicely. What really draws my attention is the blouse: very bohemian. Its 3/4 flowing sleeves and off-the-shoulder look give it quite a unique appeal.
