One very snappy sareee, to be sure! A portrait-as-postcard made around 1910 or so, the model gets two of the old studio chairs as her props. Note her cute little slipper and heavy ankle bracelet showing beneath the rather uneven hem of the checked saree.
Like so many pretty images in black and white, I wish we knew what colour this self-possessed girl was wearing. It looks like a darker shade of something… maroon or purple? Maybe dark green or indigo with gold lines? Even inexpensive cotton sarees look rich when woven in dramatic hues. And the neat thing is that such textiles are still available today, identical to what was made a century ago.
