Modern “Vintage” Image of Sari Lady

Revisit I by Joseph M. Daniel (2006)

“Contemporary photographer Joseph M. Daniel reimagines portraits of [an] aristocratic Indian by Raja Ravi Varma, whose paintings have contributed to the imagination of an Indian feminine ideal. Through these techniques of performance photography, Daniel questions the [sic] Varma’s construction of femininity and the way his pieces circulate as normative images of womanhood.”

I found it on Pinterest, which also has many images from our own Saree Dreams blog!  This is how I wish I could see all the black-and-white studio portraits and postcards from 100+ years ago.  Just a beautiful photograph, don’t you think?
