The Gandhi Saree Heritage

One of the issues raised by the 100 saree project, that I mentioned a few months ago, is the way in which this, one size fits all, garment often gets handed down from mother to daughter, becoming part of the families social history. Here’s a fairly high profile example. This is Priyanka Gandhi, grand daughter of former Indian prime minister, Indira Gandhi, arriving at a wedding reception in New Delhi recently. Many eagle eyed fashionistas felt the her saree looked vaguely familiar and they were right.

Here’s Indira Gandhi wearing the very same saree nearly 50 years earlier to a banquet at the White House during a US visit in 1966.
