A little over a month ago, close friends, Ally Matthan and Anju Maudgal Kadam were discussing their mutual love of sarees and regretting the fact that today they seemed to be increasingly worn only on special occasions (weddings and religious festivals etc.) They made a pact that, starting on the 1st of March, they would wear a saree on at least 100 days over the year. That’s two or three times a week. They used Facebook to keep track of their progress and soon many of their friends were joining in. More and more people started posting pictures of and stories about their sarees. Ally and Anju set up an email address and a Twitter account and now they have their own website. (At the time of writing the website is just a holding page but I’m sure that will change soon.) As Ally Matthan commented, in an article on NDTV.com, ‘What started out as a simple conversation between my friend Anju Maudgal Kadam and I has mushroomed into a virtual movement.’ A movement, I suspect, some of you will want to join.
