Vintage Sunday Scholars

OK, they are in dhotis, not sarees, but I couldn’t resist.  And the dhoti is also a classic unsewn textile garment, the man’s  counterpoint to many thousands of six-yard ladies’ costumes.  This elegant and beautifully posed portrait found on ebay was labeled “young Indian scholars” from the 1930s.  I have a soft spot for that time period, shortly before independence.  The combination of western jackets worn with the dhoti is quite pleasing.  Unfortunately, today the dhoti does not receive the high-fashion nod from film stars and designers as often as does the saree – but that makes sightings today all the more special.
