The head gear is made of palm leaf. Down south and in south east of India, there are several cultural groups that make and use palm leaf umbrellas and cap. this is just a depiction of that ethnic sect.
Huh–indeed, what is up with that head gear? Is it some regional thing?
I actually rather like the colors utilized in the second saree, but the blouse looks clunky to my eyes.
The hat makes me think it may be a distant cousin of a chef’s cap. Despite the seemingly incongruous hat (as jon.kom points out, it may be a regional specialty or have some significance I don’t know about) and the loose thread someone should have removed, I like the first picture. I like the model’s fresh, understated look and the hint of good humour and mischief in her smile. Finally, I am always a sucker for regional hand-loomed saris!
