This looks like our favourite Nautch Girl once again – the famed Gauhar Jaan! The studio photograph was tinted for printing around the turn of the 20th century, and given a decorative “frame” to heighten its impact. I love the performer’s dramatic saree, deep maroon silk with a soft sheen, and all that gold on the borders and pallu. Gold bangles complete the costume nicely.

Sarees from Clio – cut work and matka silk sarees
Clio is a boutique saree shop located in Chennai. I liked their tag line:
“Elegance is not about being noticed.it’s about being felt and remembered”.
Interesting thing is that Elegance has a disadvantage, It takes hard work to achieve it and even more difficult part is that it takes a good education to appreciate it.
OK, the above was said in the context of computer programming, but I think it is true.
Clio is a unique house synonymous with sarees which has contemporary tastes and southern sensibilities. Clio also offers custom creation of classic styles designer Saree blouses that goes well with many of the sarees.
Another saree that I liked was Matka Silk saree:
Just in case you are wondering as to what Matka silk is; Matka Silk is obtained from waste Mulberry silk by hand spinning without removing the gum (sericin). Cocoons required to produce Matka are mainly obtained from Karnataka and Kashmir but spinning is mostly done in the villages of Malda and Murshidabad districts in West Bengal by women by hand spinning.
