These young women in Assam, probably college students, are doing military exercises in their everyday sarees. The mostly white and light coloured sarees seem incongruous, since this 1962 home guard group is drilling to resist the encroaching Red Chinese. Note the dark sweater worn over the saree and a striped blouse that looks like a knit, on the two right front girls. On the left, the tall woman has wrapped her pallu end into a tight belt around her waist, while others have just tucked in one corner. So serious and brave….
It has now been an entire year since I started weekly posts of earlier sarees at Sunny’s invitation. Though I live near Dallas, Texas, I love saree history and have learned so much in the past 12 months! My “saree dream” is to visit many regions of India in the near future. Thanks for participating, as all blog-readers’ comments and insights are greatly appreciated.
