An unusual mix of sarees on these ladies! How styles have changed since 1970, when this photograph (in two parts), was made in Allahabad. Wild, rather psychedelic patterns on people’s mothers and middle-aged aunties; who knew? Even grandma’s geometric print is unexpected. Though not in colour, the two sarees at the left are surprisingly vivid!
The center woman is serene in her pretty mu’u mu’u – I mean saree! Doesn’t that great print look like Hawaiian floral fabric? And it’s so obvious, seeing the ladies on either side, why classic sarees never go out of style. I love the rows of tiny buti and the pallu of the dark saree. This image reminds me of my family being photographed back when I was a girl.
